FAQ
Norrdic Thoughts questions, answered
Quick answer. Do you need beard oil? No, it is optional grooming that makes a beard feel softer and look less dry. Below are short, direct answers on why men use it, what is in ours, how to use it, and the Norse history behind the brand.
Why beard oil
Do you actually need beard oil?
No. A beard grows without it, and plenty of men never use any. Beard oil is a grooming product for how a beard looks and feels, not a requirement. It tends to appeal to men who are growing a beard out, have a longer beard, live somewhere cold or dry, or simply like a softer, more finished look.
What does beard oil actually do?
Beard oil coats the hair with emollient plant oils. The usual, cosmetic result is a softer feel, less of a dry or straw-like look, a little sheen, and a beard that combs and styles more easily. It can also leave the skin underneath feeling less dry. It does not change how fast or thick the beard grows.
Why can a beard feel dry in the first place?
Beard hair is generally thicker and coarser than head hair, and the skin makes its natural oil (sebum) at the root, so the oil has to travel down the hair. The longer the beard, the less oil tends to reach the ends. Face wash, hot showers, wind, cold air, and indoor heating can all strip more away.
When does beard oil make the most sense?
It makes the most sense when you are growing a beard out, once the beard is long enough to comb, in dry or cold weather, after washing, and before styling. If you like how your beard feels now, you can reasonably skip it.
When might you not need it?
Short stubble, a beard that already feels soft, or very oily skin are all cases where many men skip oil or use less. If a product ever feels greasy or heavy on your skin, use less or stop.
Does beard oil make a beard grow faster or thicker?
No, and we do not claim it does. Beard growth is driven mainly by genetics and hormones, and a topical oil does not change that. Oil changes how the hair you already have feels and looks.
Does beard oil stop beard itch?
We make no claim that it does. Some men find that a softer, better-conditioned beard feels less scratchy, but itching can have several causes, including skin conditions. If itching or irritation persists, see a doctor or dermatologist.
What is the difference between beard oil, beard balm, wax, and moisturizer?
Beard oil is a light, liquid oil blend that adds softness and a little sheen. Beard balm usually adds butters or wax for more hold and conditioning. Beard wax is mainly for styling hold. A face moisturizer is a water-based product made for skin, not hair. Many men use oil as the simplest first step.
How do you choose a beard oil?
Look for a short, readable ingredient list of carrier oils, check it against any allergies (tree nut oils such as sweet almond are common), decide whether you want a scent or not, and prefer a dropper bottle so you can control how much you use. Do a small patch test before first use.
The brand
What does Norrdic Thoughts mean?
Norðr is Old Norse for north. The second R in Norrdic is the family name Orr, folded into the word.
Who is behind Norrdic Thoughts?
Norrdic Thoughts is founded by Brian Orr. It is a Scandinavian-inspired grooming brand, men's line first, built around quiet quality: natural ingredients and no-nonsense function.
What does quiet quality mean?
It means restraint over noise: natural ingredients, a short list, a dry sense of humor, and a habit you can keep. It is the opposite of rugged-Americana branding built on barbershop, campfire, and whiskey bar imagery.
Is Norrdic Thoughts a Viking brand?
Not in the costume sense. The look borrows from the landscapes, boats, and craft of the old north and from the real history of Norse grooming. There are no horned helmets and no war paint.
How can I become a founding tester?
Leave your email on this page. The first 25 testers receive a free bottle and are asked for an honest review, good or bad.
The oil
Can I buy Norrdic Thoughts beard oil today?
Yes. Order on The oil page. Orders ship within three business days, and US shipping is free over $50.
How much does it cost?
$26 for the 30 ml bottle and $42 for the 60 ml bottle. A refill subscription saves 10% and can be paused or cancelled any time.
What does the bottle look like?
A dark amber glass dropper bottle with an ink-colored label, the gold mark of the bearded man, and a plain kraft carton.
What size is the bottle?
Two sizes: 30 ml (1 fl oz), which lasts most men six to eight weeks with daily use, and 60 ml (2 fl oz).
What is in it, and does it contain a nut oil?
Jojoba, argan, grapeseed, sweet almond, castor, and vitamin E, with the Still Fjord scent blend. Sweet almond is a tree nut, so avoid it if you have a tree nut allergy.
History
Did Vikings groom their beards?
Yes, grooming is well documented. Antler combs turn up at Viking-age sites such as Birka, Hedeby, and York, and tweezers and ear scoops are found in graves, which points to regular personal grooming of hair and, very likely, beards.
Did Vikings use beard oil?
We know of no surviving evidence of beard oil specifically. What the record shows is the habit: combs, tweezers, and a named washing day. Norrdic Thoughts borrows the habit of careful grooming, not a claim about an ancient product.
What does laugardagr mean?
Laugardagr is the Old Norse word for Saturday. It translates as washing day, and the name survives in the Scandinavian words for the weekday.
What does skegg mean in Old Norse?
Skegg is the Old Norse word for beard. It shows up in nicknames such as Síðskegg (Long-Beard) for Odin and in the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard's name.
Who was Harald Fairhair and what was the hair oath?
In Norse tradition, Harald Fairhair was the king credited with uniting Norway. Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla says he vowed not to cut or comb his hair until he ruled all of Norway, and that it took about ten years. It is a legend rather than a verified fact.
What is Heimskringla?
Heimskringla is a collection of sagas about the kings of Norway, written down by the Icelandic scholar Snorri Sturluson around 1230. It is a main source for the Harald Fairhair story and is a medieval telling, not an eyewitness record.
Did Vikings wear horned helmets?
No. Archaeology has not turned up horned Viking helmets. The image was popularized much later, by 19th-century costume and stage design.
What does norðr mean?
Norðr is Old Norse for north. It is the root of the word Norse and of the first half of the name Norrdic Thoughts.
Using it
How do you use beard oil?
Warm a few drops between your palms, work the oil through from the skin out to the tips, comb it through, and stop. The Norrdic Thoughts ritual is three steps: warm, work, stop.
How much beard oil should I use?
Three to six drops. A short beard needs three, a long beard closer to six. Add more only if it still feels dry.
How often should you use beard oil?
Many men use it once a day, often after washing. Start there, then use it less often if the beard feels heavy, or more often in cold dry weather.
Should beard oil go on a wet or dry beard?
Most men apply it to a clean, towel-dried beard, which helps it spread evenly. It also works on a dry beard as a finishing touch.
Do you need a comb?
A comb helps spread the oil evenly from root to tip. Combs are also among the most common grooming finds at Viking-age sites.
Can you use beard oil on a mustache or on head hair?
On a mustache, yes, in a very small amount and kept away from the mouth. We have not tested or designed this oil for head hair, so we make no recommendation for it.
Does beard oil replace washing or conditioning?
No. Oil is a finishing step. Wash your beard as you normally would, then oil it. Oil does not clean.
Should you patch test a beard oil first?
Yes. Put a small amount on the inside of your forearm and wait a day before using it on your face. Stop using it if you notice irritation.
Ingredients
What is in Norrdic Thoughts beard oil?
A classic carrier-oil blend: jojoba, argan, grapeseed, sweet almond, castor, and vitamin E, scented with our Still Fjord blend of bergamot, sea air, juniper, birch, and cedar.
What is a carrier oil?
A carrier oil is a plain plant oil used as the base of a product, often to dilute fragrance or active ingredients and to coat the hair. Beard oils are mostly made of carrier oils.
What is jojoba oil?
Jojoba oil comes from the seeds of the jojoba shrub. It is technically a liquid wax rather than a true oil, and it is valued for a light, clean finish.
What is argan oil?
Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree, which grows in Morocco. It is used in grooming for a soft, conditioned feel.
What is grapeseed oil?
Grapeseed oil is pressed from grape seeds, a by-product of winemaking. It is thin and fast, so it adds slip without feeling heavy.
What is sweet almond oil, and is it a nut allergen?
Sweet almond oil is pressed from almond kernels and is a smooth, familiar base. Almonds are a tree nut, so anyone with a tree nut allergy should not use a product containing it.
What is castor oil?
Castor oil is pressed from castor beans. It is thick and adds body and a little shine, which is why it is used in small proportion.
What is vitamin E doing in the blend?
Vitamin E (tocopherol) is commonly added to plant-oil products to help keep the oils from going off. It is part of the blend for that reason.
Does the oil have a scent?
Yes, one. Still Fjord opens with bergamot and sea air, settles into juniper and birch, and finishes on cedar with a trace of smoke. It is light and sits close to the skin.
Does Norrdic Thoughts make health claims?
No. The brand describes how the oil feels and looks, such as a soft, conditioned finish.
Is the oil safe for sensitive skin?
Every skin is different. Do a patch test first, and speak with a doctor or dermatologist if you have a skin condition. We make no claim about treating any skin or hair condition.
Why such a short ingredient list?
Because the point is restraint. A short list of well-known carrier oils is easy to read, easy to check against allergies, and easy to trust. The formula is a classic one, and the difference is in the ritual and the design.
Women's line
Is there a women's line?
It is in development. The women's line will have its own mark, formula, and rose gold color system, and there is no launch date yet.
How do I hear when it is ready?
Join the waitlist on the Women page and we will write when it is ready.
Will the women's line be a beard oil?
No. Beard oil is the men's hero product. The women's product, formula, and format are not decided.
Why is the women's line separate?
It gets its own mark, formula, and look instead of being a recolored version of the men's line. We would rather launch it properly than quickly.
