How do you use beard oil in three steps?

ansuz, a god, speechQuick answer. Warm three to six drops between your palms, work the oil through from skin to tip and comb it, then stop. More is not better.

Three steps. That is all of them.

01Warm

A few drops between the palms. Warm them before they touch your face. The pause is part of it.

02Work

Start at the skin and work outward. Then comb it through, the way the combs found in Viking-age graves suggest.

03Stop

Stop when it looks like your beard on a good day. More is not better. That is the dry humor part.

Three to six drops a day. Fewer for a short beard, more for a long one.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

How do you use beard oil?

Warm a few drops between your palms, work the oil through from the skin out to the tips, comb it through, and stop. The Norrdic Thoughts ritual is three steps: warm, work, stop.

How much beard oil should I use?

Three to six drops. A short beard needs three, a long beard closer to six. Add more only if it still feels dry.

How often should you use beard oil?

Many men use it once a day, often after washing. Start there, then use it less often if the beard feels heavy, or more often in cold dry weather.

Should beard oil go on a wet or dry beard?

Most men apply it to a clean, towel-dried beard, which helps it spread evenly. It also works on a dry beard as a finishing touch.

Do you need a comb?

A comb helps spread the oil evenly from root to tip. Combs are also among the most common grooming finds at Viking-age sites.

Can you use beard oil on a mustache or on head hair?

On a mustache, yes, in a very small amount and kept away from the mouth. We have not tested or designed this oil for head hair, so we make no recommendation for it.

Does beard oil replace washing or conditioning?

No. Oil is a finishing step. Wash your beard as you normally would, then oil it. Oil does not clean.

Should you patch test a beard oil first?

Yes. Put a small amount on the inside of your forearm and wait a day before using it on your face. Stop using it if you notice irritation.

Why can a beard feel dry in the first place?

Beard hair is generally thicker and coarser than head hair, and the skin makes its natural oil (sebum) at the root, so the oil has to travel down the hair. The longer the beard, the less oil tends to reach the ends. Face wash, hot showers, wind, cold air, and indoor heating can all strip more away.

When does beard oil make the most sense?

It makes the most sense when you are growing a beard out, once the beard is long enough to comb, in dry or cold weather, after washing, and before styling. If you like how your beard feels now, you can reasonably skip it.

When might you not need it?

Short stubble, a beard that already feels soft, or very oily skin are all cases where many men skip oil or use less. If a product ever feels greasy or heavy on your skin, use less or stop.
